Performance Reviews and Employee Development
An employee evaluation or performance review process is a great way to market your company to your employee and further develop your existing talent.
Remember when you were in grade school and you had to bring home a “report card” to your parents. Different emotions were attached to these report cards — some positive and others terrifying. When you finally graduated, you assumed the days of “report cards” would be a thing of the past. However, as an owner of a business or as the hiring manager, giving out “grades” is a still a critical component of your job. It’s also another opportunity to recruit your staff, again, because retaining staff is far cheaper than hiring new ones.
Even if you have little turnover, an employee evaluation or performance review process is a great way to market your company to your employee and further develop your existing talent. And to the surprise of many managers, employees DO want reviews. They want to know how well they are performing and they like it in writing!

Corra found this a most informative article. It’s good to know employees actually look toward evaluation as either reinforcement of a job well done or a barometer for what they should fix.
Of course, your business would have been best served if the dunces in the class, that is the dwellers on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder, hadn’t been hired to begin with. Or, being fair, there were candidates who showed promise, who even delivered on that promise but whose performance levels waned over time.
As for those who should have never been hired a pre-employment screening program and a psychological profile might have gone a long way to avoid what is now an obvious mistake. Criminal reports, education verification and even MVR Driving Reports can go a long way into determining the right fit for the job.
As for giving them low grades on their report cards. Maybe it’s time to call their mothers.
