Italy: Rome Targets Illegal Immigrants
Summary
Recent events and comments from newly appointed Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini suggest that the new Italian government will take a much tougher stance on immigration than did its predecessor. Rome is focusing on illegal immigration and the Roma right now; but if the crackdown on Roma immigrants succeeds, the government will turn its focus to other immigrant groups.
From Stratfor.
Corra Background Checks has noted for some time that there is increased government crackdown on undocumented workers within the borders of the United States. As this article attests, this is now a consideration in Italy and, from other information, Germany.
How nations will resolve this issue is puzzling at least. While the citizenry seem to push for crackdowns, the governments realize they should act. But then what do you do? Round up people within national borders and ship them back to the country of their origin? Tough work. And for that you would probably need cheap labor to do the leg work. Which means, possibly, hiring illegal workers to round up other illegal workers and ship them back.
Meanwhile, use the background check as a key tool is determining who is documented and who is undocumented. Corra recommends the Social Security Trace, which has fast turnaround times and works in most cases. Corra also offers electron I-9’s, so you don’t have to bother filling out any paper forms.
And always run the criminal background check. The last thing you need is someone undocumented and who is a convicted felon working in your place of business.
Check them out before you hire.
