Is Your Temp’s Degree For Real?

According to an article in topix more temporary workers, or temps, have college degrees.   Where the temporary employment industry was once largely clerical or blue collar industrial, it is now a favorite of a lot of professionals.

This was stand to reason since many employees cannot find full time employment and need to resort to temp status.   There are also a great many who elect to work only when they wish rather than be obligated to a full time job.   Boomers and retired folk especially, sign on for temp work to supplement their incomes, their falling portfolios and rising cost of living.

Some of these temp professionals have been out of work for awhile.   Some, frankly, may be stretching things a bit, all right, lying, when they claim they have a degree.   Clearly, as a temp agency, or even as a company hiring temporary employees, it pays to run a background check before putting your candidate to work.  You can embarrass your company by sending an unqualified candidate to your client or put them to work in house.   And then there is the matter of potential lawsuits.

Aside from the usual criminal report, it is wise to conduct an education verification search as part of your preemplolyment screening program.   When candidates lie, they tend to lie about the education.   This is often the case when they have been bey0nd typical school age for awhile, and believe or hope they won’t be found out.

So check them out before you hire.
