Okay, so you have a teacher who allegedly threatened the stepfather of a a former student with a gun. It was later discovered by Los Angeles Detectives that the teacher may have had sex with an underage student. Whether it is confirmed or not, it would stand to reason the gun charge resulted from an angry parent confronting the teacher about having sex with his student. This is conjecture, but it is the same conclusion reached by the Los Angeles Police Department. This is according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.
After reviewing the situation, which means reviewing the charges brought by the Los Angeles Police, as well as an internal review, the Los Angeles School Board concluded mistakes were made with the way this teacher was treated. However, none of the staff was too blame. No one was particularly accountable for the mistakes that enabled this teacher to transfer schools and even take the position of Vice Principal. Not bad for a buy suspected of chasing after his students.
Even now, he is under suspicion of molesting several of his students. He denies it; the case in under investigation, and the school district is once again embarrassed. Not only is it embarrassed, but in a time when the economy is lousy and budgets are tight, the LAUSD may have left itself open for additional law suits. And then there is the minor fact of endangering students with whom you were entrusted.
Sexual Offenders are a serious business. They can deflate morale in the work place and still up the kind of animosity that can distract your employees. Women hate him, if he is a child molester, and men will fantasize about some type of physical revenge. This is a very toxic situation and one that also leaves your wide open to litigation.
Recently, we caught one sexual offender who was about to find gainful employment in the city park. Where children play. Luckily, despite the fact that he never listed himself as a sexual offender, we found his record, which included five convictions for sex crimes against minors. Lovely.
So be sure as part of your preemployment screening program to run the kind of background checks that will turn up those on the sexual offenders registry and those who have been convicted of crime. Be proactive and run the searches that will help prevent the toxic environment that this kind of offender can bring to any work place.
