SHRM Backs Employment Verification Bill

SHRM, the largest human resources organization, has back legislation that is causing a bit of a stir.   The proposed bill would require all employers to sign up for an Electronic Employer Verification System.  This is based on the new-hire system to enforce child support payments.

In this economy there are more than a few deadbeat dads, the main offenders, who find it inconvenient to make payments for their children.  Additionally, this bill would eliminate the I-9 Program and would apply civil and criminal penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.   This would take the onus off the undocumented workers and place it on the employers who choose to hire them.   It would also centralize the undocumented worker issue and not make it an issue from state to state.

This is a big step up for background checks and preemployment screening.  This is a notable improvement over E-Verify which has proven inaccurate and requires numerous paper documents in order to implement a search.  While proponents of E-Verify argue that the system has a one percent rate of inacchttp://www.corragroup.com/ScreeningPackages.htmluracy, this new system would also harness the databases from the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security.

In these tought economic times, when everyone seems preoccupied with everything else, it is good to see Sharm is helping to make progress in addressing the undocumented worker and child support scofflaw issues.
