Social Media Background Checks Find “Stupid Girl”

Ere.Net, a web and blog site for employment recruiters, just published its top ten blogs of 2010.   Among the top ten, and deservedly so, was a blog post by Rich DeMatteo.     His post is entitled, Stupid Girl Loses Job Because of Facebook Post(how would you handle the situations as the employer?)

DeMatteo doesn’t mince any words when he points out one woman who on what DeMatteo terms as Lamebook who dissed her boss in every direction.  The woman must have forgotten her boss was also a friend.  Uh oh.   The woman’s disparaging post elicited and even more pronounced response from her boss who called her to task for shoddy work habits and a number of other attributes that let’s say do not provide for the ideal employee.   Not the smartest of moves, that’s for sure.

Rich Matteo lists the things the woman did wrong, and I shall list them here for your perusal.   Matteo asks for input on this matter, and anyone with relevant feedback should respond to him.   I would imagine he would still be interested, even though his post has been up for awhile.  Here is DeMatteo’s list…

Poor stupid Lindsay, you’ve given me so much material to play with here. I don’t even know where or how to begin, in fact I’m kind of disappointed in myself (sigh). When all else fails, I turn to lists. Here is the “Dumb Things That Lindsay Did” list.

  • Dumb #1 – “OMG I HATE MY JOB!!” You never know who’s watching, so say only good things about your job on social media.
  • Dumb #2 – Attacking anyone through social media is dumb.
  • Dumb #3 – Attacking your boss through social media is dumber.
  • Dumb #4 – Forgetting your boss is a friend on Facebook and then doing Dumb #1 and Dumb #3 is the dumbest.

DeMatteo asks is we know of anyone who has performed a similar act.  Sadly, yes.   As a background checking service we are sometimes asks to monitor a job applicant’s social media profile.  Let’s be kind here and say some employment candidates are more astute than others and realize prospective employers, yet alone current employers, may be reviewing social media for disparaging comments about employers, bosses, working conditions, and the other stuff that may keep the candidate from being considered for the job.  You would think with a tight job market and a lousy economy applicants would know better.  But many don’t.  Better a laugh from their friends than a paycheck at the end of the week.

So I really enjoyed Rich Matteo’s posting.  If I had any complaint, I only wish it was longer.   Funny, to the point, and, unfortunately, all too true.

Nice post, Rich.  And congratulations for being chosen as one of the top ten blog posts on ERE.net
