Yesterday, we reported that a tutor from the Brockton School District was accused of rape and assault. The tutor apparently had previous criminal charges, but they were missed as no one filed documents with the state, requesting a background check. That article was entitled Another Case Where Sex Assailant Slips Through Background Checks.
Today, the Enterprise News reports that other Brockton tutors did not receive a background check. These tutors are college students working part time. Most, it would seem, are of majority, meaning they are over eighteen. Once they are of majority, all criminal records for those eighteen and over are accessible through background checks. In all, about 150 students work as tutors.
According to the article, schools would previous receive a response to a request for a background check only if the check indicated a problem, Malone said Monday. Now, the school will receive documentation confirming that a check has been done and the tutor has been cleared. A much better idea.
