Colorado owners of medical marijuana dispensaries and their vendors will now undergo background checks. According to The Republic, the bill goes into effect July 1st, 2011.
The state Department of Revenue began issuing licenses Thursday for people who work in marijuana shops. Employees will have to be licensed to show that they meet residency requirements and are free of any drug felonies. Anyone working in proximity to a medical marijuana dispensary, including accountants, will need to be licensed.
Regulations mandate that workers must be 21 and must show proof they’ve lived in Colorado two years. The two year residency requirement will likely apply only to owners, not employees, under a bill awaiting the governor’s signature.
As a background checking service, we already conduct background checks for medical marijuana dispensaries in different states. In Colorado, the fact that employees must be at least twenty one-years-old may deny some college kids a much desired summer or part-time job. Just kidding. Background checks are a smart move on the part of Colorado.
