The New Old Folks’ Home is a Modern Independent Business

Corra has read and heard all the talk about older people starting their own businesses. Senior citizens and younger folk are the major entrepreneurs, it would seem. Corra supposes the younger people have the desire to take risks, and the senior people feel they have less to lose.

The senior entrepreneurs certainly have experience, and they usually have more patience. In 2004, 24% of the working men 62 to 64 and more than a third of those 70 or older were self-employed. There are a number of reasons for this.

People are living longer, and many want to feel active and relevant and be in the trenches. Retirement is not a thrill for them. Speaking of thrills, many start their own businesses because the type of business envelopes a subject of interest to them. They have passions and to be able to tend to their passions and make money is a great bargain.

And then, finally, when you are over 60 finding work can be tough. Corporations may go on about the need for seniors in the ever depleting workforce. They may praise their experience and acumen, but many are not hiring seniors at the level they claim. So, what the hey…open your own business.

A new business can require partners or co-ventures. Partners require background checks, as do your employees. But for venture partners Corra recommends the Comprehensive/Partner Background Report. We also recommend you running business credit reports on any business with which you engage. If nothing else, a business credit report will help you ascertain whether a client is able and willing to pay your invoices.

If your are hiring, it is important to run a criminal search, at the very least. There are other searches Corra would also recommend.

Check them out before you hire.
