Illinois’ Orland School District 135 Board of Education will look into adding a requirement that board members submit to background check before they could serve. The new proposal would keep convicted sex offenders from becoming members of the school board.
This new proposal reflects the policy that the school board is intent on protecting its children. That is serious in screening its board members through background checks.
We believe this a wise move and a proactive one. The worst thing for school boards and public service agencies is to conduct these background checks only after someone is assaulted and it is learned in the aftermath the assailant has a previous conviction for sex crimes. So we applaud the effort on the part of the Orland School Board.
