The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that there will be more layoffs n the Airline Industry. The airlines in general expect to part with as much as 8% of their work force. That’s for now. Who knows what will happen in the future? What with the cancellation of flights and the price of energy, there could be more job cuts further down the road.
Flying was once romantic. Today, certain luxury airlines or private services notwithstanding, it is painful on the best of days. Between the crowds, the security checks, flight delays and cancellations, it is an enervating experience. Overall, with the airline industry if it is not all bad news then it is with mostly bad news. But there is one silver lining.
If you are in the service industry, the resort industry. If you work in the hotel industry or the travel industry, then you may look to recruit the recently unemployed airline workers. The pilots may not do you much good, but the service staff, the flight attendants and ticket takers may be just what you need. Look at all the adversity they have to deal with on a daily basis. What your business provides, by comparison, may be a true respite that seems like a luxury vacation.
Of course it is important to screen your prospects careful and to have a good preemployment screening program in place. Running employment background checks is mandatory, pretty much, anymore. But in the overall, this should prove an attractive pool for recruitment.
If you travel at all, you see what they put up with. You already know the story. Just don’t let them service those lousy in flight meals.
Check them out before you hire.
