Outsourcing Can Come Back To Haunt Your Business

O.C. court defends outsourcing

Public reacts to use of company that sends DMV data to Mexico.

The Orange County Register

Orange County’s Superior Court contracts with a company that uses workers in Nogales, Mexico, to do the data entry of traffic tickets, a revelation on Thursday that outraged many who fear personal information is leaving the country.

The court has contracted since March 2006 with Cal Coast Data Entry, Inc., a Cerritos company that has a facility in Nogales. Information from tickets – including drivers’ license numbers, car license numbers, birth dates and addresses – are scanned at the Cerritos facility and sent electronically to the Mexican facility.

In a statement issued Thursday evening, court officials defended use of the company, saying transfer of ticket information was by electronic encryption and the company has state-of-the-art security.

“The company and the staff they employ are dedicated to keeping the public’s data secure and safe,” the statement said. “The court wants to ensure the public that private data is safe.”

Court officials refused to release the cost of the contract and said they would continue using the company. Cal Coast officials wouldn’t comment, citing client confidentiality.

This local event has stirred up a great deal of controversy. Corra has heard the rancor over the radio, and with it, naturally, extended discussions about outsourcing in general. We have all heard the pros and cons, and Corra believes there are cogent arguments on both sides of the issue.

With this particular cases, those opposed to this particular outsourcing adventure complained that language and translation problems have slowed up the processing of traffic tickets, court dates, etc. Corra, among millions out there, has experienced language difficulties when speaking to outsourced services in any number of foreign countries. Spelling your name or repeating the same sentence two, three, four times can be frustrating, leaving you wonder if they got it, after all.

Many businesses figure service is a bygone expectation. They are wrong. Few things will jump start your business, help you maintain and expand it than good customer relations and service. When it is good, the best service can be created domestically. Why? Because the language idiom, vernacular, and detail are often important when discerning a customers needs and wants.

When recruiting domestically it is always smart to have a strong interview process, a proper training program, and a thorough preemployment screening program in place. By all means run a criminal background check, but check education and employment verifications as well. Sometimes it is wise to run a credit report to make sure your service person is fiscally responsible, which often does affect how he or she understands the needs and wishes of your clients.

Check them out before you hire.
